Julia Galef
Julia Galef (nata il 4 luglio 1983) è un’autrice e conduttrice di podcast statunitense. È la cofondatrice ed ex presidente del Center for Applied Rationality, conduttrice del podcast Rationally Speaking e autrice di Esploratori e soldati. Vedere le cose come sono e non come le vorremmo.
Background
Galef ha studiato statistica alla Columbia University. Nel 2012 ha co-fondato il Center for Applied Rationality,a e ne è stata presidente fino al 2016.1
Rationally Speaking
Nel 2010, Galef e il suo co-conduttore Massimo Pigliucci hanno lanciato Rationally Speaking, un podcast sulla razionalità, lo scetticismo e altri argomenti. Nel 2015 Pigliucci ha lasciato il programma e Galef è diventata l’unica conduttrice e produttrice del podcast2.

La mentalità dell’esploratore
Nel 2021, Galef ha pubblicato il suo primo libro, Esploratori e soldati (Titolo originale: The Scout Mindset).
Il titolo del libro si riferisce a una caratteristica, comune alle persone di buon giudizio, che Galef definisce come “la motivazione a vedere le cose come sono, non come vorresti che fossero”14 Galef contrappone questa mentalità dell’esploratore alla mentalità del soldato. A differenza degli esploratori, che cercano prove che migliorino l’accuratezza delle loro convinzioni e vedono l’errore come un’opportunità per rivedere il loro modello del mondo, i soldati cercano prove che confermino le loro convinzioni esistenti e vedono l’errore come una sconfitta umiliante.
Esploratori e soldati ha ricevuto elogi da Philip Tetlock,15 Scott Alexander,16 e Dylan Matthews,17 tra gli altri.
L’organizzazione 80,000 Hours ha citato Galef come esempio di una carriera di grande successo nel promuovere miglioramenti nel processo decisionale delle istituzioni.18
